In the event of an accident, natural disaster or act of violence, UW–Madison is prepared to respond. The university has a detailed crisis plan that is designed to provide resources, coordination and information to responders, the campus community and the community at large.
The plan takes an “all-hazards” approach, giving administrators the flexibility to address any major or minor incident that might impact the campus community. Administrators and police take part in regular training sessions and simulations to prepare for such events. The plan is an evolving document and is constantly reviewed and updated for improvements. The UW Police Department’s Emergency Management Unit leads the crisis planning efforts.
The campus community may be informed about a situation and ways to stay safe by a variety of means, including the WiscAlerts system (which encompasses text messages, email, voice calls, the university's home page and social media) along with updates posted to a dedicated campus alerts site at http://alerts.wisc.edu.
